The bull seems to be emerging from a black rectangle towards the light, while at the same time disappearing into the adjacent white shape. As is customary in bullfights, the animal emerges from the darkness (bull pen) into the light of the arena, where the bullfighter who will kill him is awaiting in his fancy traje de luces. Francis Bacon (1909 – 1992) was an Irish-born British figurative painter known for his raw, unsettling imagery. Focusing on the human form, his subjects included crucifixions, portraits of popes, self-portraits, and portraits of close friends, with abstracted figures sometimes isolated in geometrical structures. He built up a reputation as one of the giants of contemporary art with his unique style. Bacon's reputation has grown steadily, and his work is among the most acclaimed, expensive and sought-after on the art market.
